Description
After a short introductory fanfare, the main musical material is introduced: an arpeggio figure based on the chord of Bb minor and an answering rising scalic figure in Db major, with offbeat accompaniment. The music is interrupted by a reprise of the opening fanfare, but this quickly fragments into the figuration of the main material before the trombone introduces the principal theme. The offbeat motific figures and rising scales continue, now providing the accompaniment when the horn joins the trombone in a duet version of the main melody. The movement draws to a peaceful close as the melody and counter-melody settle and the accompanying figures subside.
