‘For dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return’ – Genesis 3:19, King James Bible
I am deeply interested in processes of becoming, where seemingly unordered material is moulded – if only briefly – into something coherent, which must eventually cease to be so. In Return order is obscured through layers of glass or fog or rubble, with moments of clarity allowing glimpses of the true form. From these fragments a tentative picture is built, but it is only the shell of something that was.
Return was commissioned by the Richmond concert society as part of the Guildhall School’s Mary Ryan Award for composition. It was first performed by the Caeli Quintet at St Mary’s Church, Twickenham, in July 2018.
