Description
Equals was composed with the idea of creating an immediately energetic and ebullient mood at the outset. There are deliberate minimalist overtones in the writing with melodic material developing within its textures. The central section is calmer and more conversational, but it returns to its opening material to finish with further joie de vivre. As the title suggests, every member of the ensemble has an important role to play. It is designed for both the concert hall and the competition stage, and the opportunity to perform the piece with doubling on each part should not be overlooked. The composer considers this music to be his most joyful and upbeat work to date.
