Description
Many years ago I came across a rather unflattering photograph of Arturo Toscanini in his later years wearing a slightly comical looking pair of trousers, it amused me so much that I resolved to write a piece called ‘Toscanini’s Trousers’. Some years later I was composing a set of pieces and the idea of ‘Toscanini’s Trousers’ seemed perfect – the music (like the trousers) gets higher and higher before finally falling down. I have always imagined it as a miniature silent movie comedy, hence the vamp-like piano part.
