Horn Trio

Description
The work begins with a short fanfare-like movement in Bb major, which includes a central more lyrical section. The second movement entitled ‘Horn Blues’ is deeply melancholic and highly chromatic, requiring some hand stopping from the first horn. A short more rhythmically complex movement in the irregular time signature of 7/8 leads directly into a rousing hunt, the opening few bars of which include incipits of three horn calls from Köhler’s The Coach Horn: What to Blow and How to Blow it: no. IX ‘Higher Up’; no. X ‘A Rustic Call’; and no. VII ‘Change Horses’.
