This suite was started in Easingwold, but mostly worked on in Canada in 2007 when I first went over there to help Jane sort the house out. I felt I had to do something other than decorating and gardening to justify the happy and in some ways laid back existence in Scarborough Ontario, especially as playing the clarinet was out of the question. There are five movements. The first is rather obviously owing a great deal to one of my favourite Chopin waltzes. No. 2 is meant to capture the mood of the Bruce Trail near Hamilton Ontario, but includes a nostalgic reference to the English countryside. No. 3 is meant to describe the acrobatics of the squirrels who chased each other all over Jane’s garden winter and summer. No. 4 attempts to capture the eeriness of Canoe Lake, Algonquin Park – scene of another enigma concerning a Canadian artist. The finale describes the short, scenic train ride connecting two lakes at Huntsville.
