These 2 pieces are in very contrasting moods, reflecting the different personalities of our 2 most favourite pets. People usually favour one more than the other!
The Cat is slinky, sly and cautious, moving in mystery.  The mood is often dissonant and wandering, sounding almost hypnotic in places. There is a somewhat smug middle section, where some plaintive “miaows” are leading us to who knows where?  A lone, unpredictable feline goes just where it pleases ! There is plenty of scope to shape your own interpretation, especially when exploring through the expressive solo phrases.
The Dog depicts the ever-faithful loyal friend, often clumsy in nature but determined to enjoy itself. It has a playful melody that bounds along with enthusiasm, and a noble howling middle section, reassuring us that we can depend on our dog to stay true, even if it gets a little lost along the way! The work boasts a great nobility and pride that every dog owner sees in their dog’s eyes at some time or another, but which masks an often unbearable vulnerability.
