Description
Festival Overture was composed in 2005, and has subsequently undergone two revisions, including for the present publication.
The piece opens expansively, with bubbling clarinets and rising motifs in horns and trumpets. The introduction gives way to a sparkling and jubilant section featuring the piece’s main material. Excitement builds with fanfare figures in the trumpets. The second main section is calm and reflective in mood, with a lilting theme presented by woodwinds. A wistful oboe solo becomes disrupted by turbulence before the piece’s opening material returns triumphantly. A short march-like section precedes the brief coda, ending in a radiant E flat major chord.
Festival Overture was first performed on 7 March, 2009, at the Adrian Boult Hall in Birmingham, with James Woolliscroft conducting the University of Birmingham Wind Orchestra.
